It was a little after ten when her computer informed her of an incoming call. She frowned a little and held her breath as she adjusted on her chair, the caller ID was telling her the caller was 'Emerald Archer' and although she knew they had planned a conference call, she was sure it had been canceled after the way their disastrous lunch ended.

With a deep breath, she nodded a little to herself and ran her fingers through her hair before accepting the call. She couldn't ignore work if he needed her and she had the feeling he wouldn't be calling unless it was extremely necessary.

He smiled very faintly when he saw the pup she was holding. "She's cute."

Chloe smiled softly as the dog started licking her face, "thank you. She's really smart."

He smirked a little at that. "Figured." He raised an eyebrow at her.

"And she's good company," she said quietly, smiling at the dog faintly as she pressed a kiss to her head. She wasn't going to tell him about it, but it had gotten incredibly lonely in Metropolis in the past month and half.

Oliver drew in a breath and nodded a little. "Good," he said quietly.

Chloe took a deep breath and looked at at the dog then back at him, "is there anything else you wanted to talk to me about?"

He felt his chest tighten at her words and he shook his head a little. "No, I think we're good. Did you need something?"

She stared at him for a moment then shook her head a little, hugging the dog to her, "not really, I'll get started on the research."

"Right. Thanks," he said softly, nodding. "All right. Well, have a good night. Stay safe." He rubbed a hand over his face warily before reaching toward the button to end the conference.

"Ollie, wait." She called, her eyes widening a little.

He paused, glancing up at the screen once more. "Yeah?"

Chloe pursed her lips together and looked at him for a long moment, "I'm sorry."

He shut his eyes for a moment. "You don't...there's no reason to apologize, Chloe."

She took a deep breath and shook her head a little, "there is, I just, I'm not sure how to fix it." She said quietly, looking down.

He was silent for a moment, looking down, as well. "I'm not sure it can be fixed. Maybe it's not supposed to be."

Chloe's jaw clenched and she felt her eyes tearing up so she kept her head down, "maybe it's not." She whispered, her voice wavering slightly.

"Maybe we should try something else instead." His voice was quiet, his chest tightening at the faint tremor in her voice.

She took a deep breath, trying to pull herself together but she didn't lift her head, "like what?"

"Maybe we should just act like none of what happened...happened."

"We've tried that before," she said quietly, glancing at the camera then down at the dog.

"Not exactly." He was silent for a moment. "I meant...more going back to the way things were before we ever crossed that line."

"We tried that too, Ollie," she told him, sighing deeply and finally looking back at the camera, "and we ended up going back to it." Back to bed.

He let out a breath. "So what do you suggest?"

"Like I said, I don't know how to fix it." She pursed her lips together, "but I don't want things to stay like this either."

He was silent for a moment, looking even more weary than before. "I don't think I'm going to be coming to Kansas anytime soon." His voice was very quiet.
