Reconnecting with dl_greenarrow.

It had been a long time since she'd seen Oliver, not because they'd been arguing this time, but because they'd both been busy. They still talked on the phone and emailed back and forth but she'd been working a lot at the Planet and he'd been running a lot of missions with the guys, which she'd been helping with, but she'd been working out of the Clocktower on her own since the 33.1s they were looking into were mostly out of the country.

It had been at least four weeks at this point since he was last in town and last time she checked, they were in Argentina, so she was more than a little surprised when she got Oliver's text that said: Up for lunch, Sidekick?.

So a little after one, she made her way out of the Planet and over to the Italian restaurant Oliver had suggested. Since their trip to New York, everyone at work knew she was close with him and although she was sure most people suspected they were sleeping together, she didn't want to give them proof of anything and she'd rather not be the subject of office gossip anyway.

He couldn't help but smile at that. "That's good." Not that he was surprised.

"Yeah, I've been getting some not so terrible assignments so hopefully I'll get a promotion in the near future," she told him, not being able to stop herself from smiling too.

"I have no doubt," he said with a nod, meeting her eyes for a moment before dropping his gaze. "You're a hell of a reporter."

"Thank you," she told him quietly, compliments on her work were about the only kind she would gladly accept and actually believe.

He smiled softly, looking down at the table. "So tell me about one of the stories that you're working on?"

"Well it's not that exciting," she told him quietly, "the one I have to write in today is about the condition on the local animal shelters."

He cocked his head to the side, studying her. "What is the condition of the local animal shelters?"

"Not good," she admitted, pursing her lips together, "apparently they always get a high influx of pets in January because people give them as gifts on Christmas and have nowhere to return them to, so they dump them over there."

He winced a little. "Yeah, I think that's a fairly common thing," he murmured, frowning.

Chloe took a deep breath, "I might get a dog," she admitted, "I don't know if it's a good idea because I'm never home but..."

Oliver blinked a couple of times. "Oh. You could get a dog-sitter?"

She shook her head a little, "I don't know, the girls at the shelter said that as long as I block off a section of my apartment where the dog would feel safe in, she should be okay, but I feel bad. I could go home during lunches I guess..."

"Or maybe you could find another way to help out," he suggested, thanking the waiter when the man brought their food.

Chloe took a deep breath and nodded a little, looking down at her food then shrugging once the man left, "yeah, I guess I could."

"I'm sure you'd be a great dog-parent, though, if that's what you want." He smiled faintly and took a bite of his food.

She arched an eyebrow at that and smiled a little, "thanks," she told him, "I'll think about it."

He nodded a little and picked up his glass of wine, sipping it and gazing at her for a moment. "What kind would you want if you were going to get one?"

"Well, there is this one mutt, she's a cocker mix and every time I went there for the article, she comes running to me." Chloe admitted.

A smile tugged at his mouth involuntarily. "Sounds like your heart's already decided for you."

She sighed a little and nodded, "yeah that's the problem, it's not very logical," she said quietly, glancing at him.

He paused. "No. It usually isn't," he admitted.

"Which is why I have to think about it," she told him quietly.

Oliver glanced up at her for a brief moment, not looking her in the eyes. "Hopefully she'll still be there if you decide you're ready."

Her chest tightened a little but she shook her head, "maybe it's better for her if she finds someone else."

"Maybe," he said very softly. "Or maybe she'll just end up with people who won't give her what she needs."
